Cloudflare Outage 2025 : Why Twitter, ChatGPT, and Major Sites Went Down

Published

on

Many popular sites like X (formerly Twitter) and ChatGPT experienced major issues and downtime globally today because of a problem with Cloudflare, a massive internet service provider.

What Happened?

Cloudflare, a company that provides crucial services for about one-fifth of all web traffic, suffered an “internal service degradation” across its Global Network. Think of Cloudflare as a major highway system for the internet—when that system has an issue, all the cars (websites) relying on it start crashing or slowing down.

This disruption caused widespread “500 errors” (a code that means the server has an internal problem) for users trying to access many websites that rely on Cloudflare for:

  • Security: Protection against cyberattacks (like DDoS).
  • Speed: Delivering content quickly from the nearest location.

The problem started around 6:40 a.m. ET (or 5:10 PM IST).

Which Sites Were Affected?

Because Cloudflare is used by so many companies, the outage had a major domino effect. The list of affected services included:

Even the website Downdetector, which tracks outages, was down intermittently because it also relies on Cloudflare.

  • X (formerly Twitter)
  • ChatGPT and other OpenAI services
  • Perplexity
  • League of Legends and other games

Is It Fixed Now?

Cloudflare engineers have identified the issue and implemented a fix.

The company has reported that services are now recovering, but users may still experience higher-than-normal error rates as the system fully returns to normal.

This event once again highlights how much of the modern internet relies on a few major infrastructure providers like Cloudflare.
